This class runs for 20-25mins and purely based on using the anaerobic energy system. Or in simple terms, when we are working out so hard the demand for energy is too immediate for the amount of time it takes to metabolise oxygen. This then leaves a byproduct called lactate or lactic acid.
This energy system can only be used for efforts lasting anywhere from 30sec to 3mins max before you must stop due to periphery fatigue markers getting too alerted and your ability to perform deteriorates dramatically. Or in simple terms you start to feel sick and need to stop before you throw up your food.
Why would you do something like this weekly? Well in order to continue to improve your fitness every energy system must be trained to continue to get us better and better. As unpleasant this type of training can be, it is a necessity to get us to push our anaerobic threshold further and further to the right, or simply delaying that sick feeling when performing hard exercise. Resulting in more training before stopping thus higher number of calories been burnt during any session.
Also seeing as the session pushes such a hard intensity it stimulates a big EPOC or excess post oxygen consumption. What this? It is the mechanism to which the metabolism plays catch up after the session by trying to prepare the body for more instances of hard exercise it has just performed. More plainly, seeing as we are adaptive mechanisms the body responds by going, ‘what the hell was that! I am going to get ready for the next time they put me through that again!’ So, for the next 12-24 hours the body will have a higher resting metabolic rate as those processes needed to get fitter are being done inside the body at an alarming rate, which means, burning more calories at rest. How good!
